Tis the Season - Exam Time!

It’s that time of the year again! For most students, exams are the most stressful time in their high school career. It can be overwhelming to think about the amount of material that you have to cover before next Thursday. It’s completely natural for you to worry, but it’s important to maintain a healthy mindset through all of this stress.

Study Tips:

1)Prepare- Preparation is key. Never begin studying without a plan. It is important to create a plan that you can follow days before the exams begin. This could entail a study schedule, the division of your binder, or even making study notes. This gives you discipline since you will feel more obligated to sit down and open a book. It’s also a good idea to share this strategy with your family so they too can help contribute to your success. The following attached template is a great study tool that can contribute to your organization.

2) Hide your distractions- We are all guilty of taking a break from studying and looking at our phone. A minute can turn into twenty without even realizing it. This is why it is a good idea to hide the distractions so that you can better focus on your schoolwork.

3) Choose a study method- We all learn differently. Thus, we all study differently. This is why it’s important to discover the method that best suits you. Here are a few options...

  • Speak aloud (My personal Favourite)

  • Re-write and condense your notes

  • Use a whiteboard

  • Teach the note as though you are the teacher

  • Quiz yourself and test your knowledge

4) Do not procrastinate – Last minute studying is never a good idea. Study ahead of time to eliminate the stress of cramming and the sleep deprivation of all-nighters.

Although studying is important, it is just as important to keep a healthy mind when studying:

1) Go for a walk- Take a break and go for a short walk. This allows you to refresh your mind while also receiving physical activity.

2) Sleep- Having a good night sleep is one of the most important factors to success during exams.

3) Pet a puppy (Seriously) – Studies show that dogs can decrease one’s stress levels substantially.

4) Listen to classical music – Research points to many ways in which classical music can assist one’s capability to concentrate.

5) Let it all out- Laughing or yelling can lessen the physical effects that stress can have on your body.

Good luck studying sabres!
