Okay, so I’m sure every high school student has heard about the basketball team and the volleyball team and of course the football team. It seems that you hear about the sports teams so often that you forget about all the clubs and other extracurricular activities. Now, I don’t mean to knock the sports teams, because Sandwich has some pretty amazing athletes. I just want to bring awareness to all the other awesome activities our school has to offer.
Do you find you take an interest in the arts? Are things such as drama, visual art, and music some of your passions? Well, there certainly isn’t a short supply of clubs for that at Sandwich. If drawing, sculpting, painting, and creating are just a few of the things you like to do, then art club is for you! If music if your forte, there is a large scale of musical endeavours that you can join. We have junior (grade 9) and senior (grades 10, 11, and 12) band, jazz band, brass band, choir, drum line, and rock band. The school musical held every year combines many different interests. If you like drama, try out for a role! If you like music, join the pit band! If you’d rather stay behind the scenes, help out the backstage crew!
The arts just not your style? Would you rather get involved in your school and help make a difference? We’ve got lots of clubs for that! Of course, there’s student parliament, where you’ll organize assemblies, events like the can drive, and play a vital role in shaping your school. Do you like to lead? How about helping your peers? Well, this blog has lots of information on the peer helpers group! We organize the giving tree for the less fortunate a Brock elementary, gives tours to future students on grade eight day and grade nine orientation, and we visit all of our feeder schools to answer grade seven students’ questions about high school. We also tutor other students in any subject imaginable. You can only join peer helpers in grades eleven and twelve but if you’re not there yet, it’s good you know about it now! Are you interested in raising awareness about world issues? In that case, you should join the students for social justice club! They talk about global and local issues and raise money and collect items for charity. Interested in stopping bullying and spreading tolerance? Do you support the LGBTQ+ community? Then join the gay-straight alliance! The GSA is responsible for campaigns such as the compliment grams and random act of kindness day, all while being a safe place for anyone to feel accepted and welcome.
Are you a little bit more competitive? Do you want to represent the Sabres outside of school? Yes, there are clubs for that too! There’s the robotics team, which is great for students who are interested in programming, designing, and building robots to compete in competitions and perform different tasks. Is business the thing for you? Well, we have the DECA team, which is a great opportunity to gain business and leadership skills. Do you want your opinion to be heard? Are you a passionate and confident public speaker? Then join the debate team! You’ll take on challenging but engaging topics and help our team debate its way to the top!
Do you like to write? Become an author for our very own Sabre Sun newspaper! Do you like to take and edit pictures? Are you always anxious to see the yearbook? Have a say in how it will look and join the yearbook club! Do you see yourself as a logical thinker? We’ve got clubs for that! Challenge yourself in the math club or defeat opponents with strategy in the chess club! Finally, if you’re a grade twelve student you can join the prom committee and make sure tha
t special day goes as planned!
You see, there’s a lot more to high school then sports. At Sandwich we offer such a large variety of clubs and activities that we have practically something for everyone! The great part about high school is that you can join both sports teams and extracurricular teams. With so many options to choose from, I’m positive you’ll find one—or five—that you love!
